Live sand is a crucial part of any nano reef aquarium. Why? Filtration. In a nano reef aquarium, or any reef aquarium for that matter, good filtration is crucial for keeping the inhabitants of the reef alive, healthy, and especially happy. Live sand isn't an oxymoron--it is what the name says. Live sand comes directly from the ocean, and is full of great things that will help your aquarium thrive.

Mixed in with live sand are millions upon millions of beneficial bacteria and creatures that act as a "clean up crew" for the ocean, and therefore your aquarium. Since live sand and live rock are often the main filter of a nano reef aquarium, a good amount (typically 1 to 2 pounds per gallon of aquarium water) is needed to keep the water of a nano tank clear and clean.
