Live Rock

SW - DFS Select Nano Live Rock - 16 lb Box

Live rock is the basis of a nano reef aquarium. And no, it's not actually the rock itself that is the basis of a reef aquarium, but the millions of tiny creatures that live in and on it. These creatures are necessary for keeping a nano reef tank healthy and happy, and do so by filtering the water of waste and harmful chemicals.

Since live rock is the almost always the primary mode of filtration for a nano reef, it has to be the highest quality. Also, in addition to filtering the aquarium water, live rock is also the "resting place" for corals and other creatures of the reef. The more live rock you can put into your nano reef the better, but the typical recommendation is 1 or 2 pounds per gallon of aquarium water.
